Magno Megonio 2022 – Librandi, Tenuta Rosaneti – Calabria IGT
Manio Megonio Leone was a Roman centurion who lived in the 2nd century AD between Crotone and Cariati, owner of extensive vineyards which, upon his death, passed to the local community — it is to him that the wine owes its name.
Librandi has grown vines in Calabria for four generations; the winery, officially founded in 1973 in Cirò Marina, is a benchmark for the promotion of native Calabrian grape varieties. Magno Megonio is born in Tenuta Rosaneti, 260 hectares in Rocca di Neto (Crotone). Here Magliocco Canino, a historic Calabrian grape almost forgotten before Librandi's recovery work, is grown between 200 and 300 metres on clay-limestone soils.
Hand-harvested at the end of September, skin maceration and temperature-controlled fermentation, then ageing in French oak barrique. Deep red colour; a nose of faded rose, notes of citron and black cherry, ripe berries and blueberry; a full sip, with tannin present but polished.
A structured red: important red meats, braised dishes, game and aged cheeses.
