Magno Megonio 2023 – Librandi, Tenuta Rosaneti – Calabria IGT
Manius Megonius Leo was a Roman centurion who lived in the 2nd century AD between Crotone and Cariati, the owner of extensive vineyards that on his death were bequeathed to the local community — and it is to him that the wine owes its name.
Librandi has been growing vines in Calabria for four generations; the winery, officially founded in 1973 in Cirò Marina, is a benchmark for the promotion of Calabria's native grape varieties. Magno Megonio comes from Tenuta Rosaneti, 260 hectares in Rocca di Neto (Crotone). Here Magliocco Canino, a historic Calabrian variety almost forgotten before Librandi's recovery work, is grown at 200-300 metres on clay-limestone soils.
Hand-picked at the end of September, macerated on the skins and fermented at controlled temperature, then aged in French oak barriques. Deep red colour; a nose of dried rose, notes of citron and black cherry, ripe berries and blueberry; a full palate with present but polished tannins.
A structured red: rich red meats, braises, game and aged cheeses.
