Barbaresco "La Ca' Nova" 2021 – La Ca' Nova
Before bottling their own Barbaresco, the Rocca family used to sell their grapes to Angelo Gaja: today those same vineyards, cultivated for three generations, give life to one of the most authentic Barbaresco wines of the area.
La Ca' Nova is a family-run estate from start to finish, born in a nineteenth-century farmhouse at the edge of the town of Barbaresco, with vineyards extending also into the neighbouring town of Treiso. For about forty years, the brothers Pietro, Giulio and Franco Rocca have divided their time between vineyard, cellar and sales, tending around 14 hectares scattered across the hills of the Langhe, including some plots in the renowned Montestefano and Montefico areas.
The style is declaredly traditionalist: spontaneous fermentation in steel, 15-20 days of skin maceration, and ageing in large oak casks. The result is a pure Nebbiolo with a bright garnet-red colour, a nose that turns toward small red fruits, blood orange, wild mint, white pepper and a mineral note of chalk. On the palate the tannin is present but polished, supported by a lively acidity that carries through to a long, savoury finish.
A wine to pair with beef braised in Barbaresco, tajarin with meat ragù, and medium-aged cheeses such as Piedmontese toma.
